How to calculate transaction (sales) conversion rate

Transaction conversion rate = (transactions ÷ sessions) × 100. If your store had 200 transactions from 10,000 sessions, that’s (200 ÷ 10,000) × 100 = 2%. That’s the core formula — but “transaction,” “sales,” and “payment” conversion rates are measured slightly differently, and mixing them up is why stores get numbers that don’t match their analytics.

The formula, step by step

  1. Count your transactions (completed orders) over a period.
  2. Count your sessions (visits) over the same period.
  3. Divide transactions by sessions.
  4. Multiply by 100 to get a percentage.

Example: 350 orders ÷ 14,000 sessions = 0.025 → 2.5%.

Sessions vs users vs orders — pick one and stick to it

The formula changes depending on your denominator:

Most analytics tools (and most benchmarks) use session-based, so use that unless you have a reason not to. Whatever you choose, keep it consistent or your trend line becomes meaningless.

Transaction vs payment conversion rate

These sound the same but measure different stages:

A healthy transaction rate with a poor payment rate points straight at a checkout problem.

Skip the math — the free conversion rate calculator works out your rate and compares it to your industry average and top performers.

What’s a good number?

Once you have your rate, it only means something in context. The overall ecommerce average is ~2%, but it ranges from ~1% (jewellery) to ~4.5% (food & beverage). See what’s a good ecommerce conversion rate by industry, or if your number looks low, why is my conversion rate low.

The bigger picture

Calculating the rate is step one; finding where buyers drop off is the real work. Revyfix adds every leak — speed, checkout, CTAs, AI visibility — into one score and ranks the fixes by payback.
